A Variety of Voices: Religion Discussed
Religion is a sensitive topic in today's society. It's like politics. If you want to get a rise out of someone, ask them about their religious beliefs or political views. When you get right down to it, such issues are deeply personal and private, especially one's religion. In today's society, religion is a topic people commonly avoid, typically at all costs. Why is this? Is there a fear that people may not agree or even approve of certain beliefs? Is it such a private issue that people dare not bring it up? Has it become so taboo that we can't even approach it? It seems people are so concerned with being politically correct that they neglect to discuss some of life’s most important questions. Granted, raising the question of religion and spirituality can start some heated debates, but that doesn't mean it should be avoided. While no one can say for certain what is a true religious belief, people have the right to discuss is. That is the purpose of this website; to raise the issue and facilitate discussion on what religion is, what it may or may not be worth and to provide opinions from the believers' side, the cynical side, the uncertain side and the professional side. The opinions provided come from students and staff members at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota, although the ideas and opinions expressed are universal. Those interviewed express varied views and ideas about religion and how they themselves perceive it and the issues involved. Not everyone listed on each page necessarily agrees with that perception of religion, but rather they are addressing the issues that the question of religion raises. Because, after all, like anything else, religion has it's good, bad and ugly aspects.
