Purpose
My site consists of an insider's
view of the small town of Wright. The voice is exactly that style also,
like I'm telling the users a story. Not only is there information
about the town but there is also an entertainment value
in that I have
stories
or little details on each page.
Design
I started out my project by
taking photos of the certain establishments in Wright that I wanted
included on my site. I thought that this would be a good way to bring
the user to the town. I think without photo's the site would not draw
in the user as much and might be fairly boring.
As for paths in the essay,
there is only one. This was done entirely on purpose. When one thinks
of a small town they think of a simple life, as keeping with that theme
I wanted the site to be simple. There is only one link on each page.
I chose words that related to the page that you would see next. In
some instances it's the actual name of the place, as in the co-op link,
but the link such as putty you don't understand until you get to the
page and see that it is the lumber yard. I did give the user one escape
route if they needed it and that is the sign in the banner that will
bring you to the home page.
I kept consistency by having
text and a photo on each page. The place of the photo on each page
is different, which is a change than if I were making a regular site
in which it would all be consistent. Also, there aren't any outside
links on my whole site. I chose to do this because I wanted all the
control of the user to go where I wanted them to go. On a regular site
I would have numerous internal links per page and also outside links
to related material, this is not the case on my essay site. By taking
away the options of the user I have more control over them as the creator
of the site. There is only one way to read my essay and its all marked
out for the user.
Problems
In my plans I had only intended
to have a few sentences on each page. When I first started I found
out that I would have to add more text because the site didn't have
a voice or any substantial information. I decided to add stories of
my experiences with the different places. This in turn helped with
the voice of the essay.
I had also intended for many
more pages to my essay. They didn't happen partially due to lack of
time and partially because I wanted the site to be small. The subject
of the site is a small town and I wanted to inforce the idea of just
how small it is by not having much on the site.
I also had some issue's trying
to get the pages uploaded, not unusual. I had put in a space when I
was saving some pages and not others so it was easy to fix by just
taking the space out and saving everything again. I decided to link the last
page back to my home page for this assignment but I will change that
if I continue on with the project, which is my plan. I will add more
pages and consider adding more than one link to a page, but I'm still
thinking if I want to change the navigation because I like the way
it is and I think it works for the site.
Another problem that was brought up during the critique of my site
was that some of my links might cause a user to bail out before reading
the entire text. I changed this on the church page by changing the
order of information. For the most part the links are at the very
end of the page but there are a couple that have the link in the
last paragraph. The home page is an exeption to this. I didn't feel
that I should change the link or switch the order of the information
because it would create confusion. However, it is the first page
you actually open in the site so I don't think the likelyhood that
the user will bail is very high.
