SITE REPORT

Purpose

The purpose of this site is to provide a sharing environment that encourages spiritual recovery for individuals that have cancer, caregivers, tose who have been touched by cancer, or those who lost a love one to cancer. There are so many websites that address cancer. Our site is different in that it is personal rather than factual, medical, or textual. We explored several existing sites in order to gather information and decide how we want our site to be different. We came to the conclusion that our site would be different by:

  • Providing a place for people to be uplifted when down
  • Providing a place for people to feel inspired when feeling hopeless
  • Providing a place that includes support and links to many resources
  • Provide a place that includes spiritual healing

The following audiences are identified:

  • Person who has been newly diagnosed with cancer
  • Person who is a cancer survivor
  • Family and Friends affected by cancer of a loved one

Themes

We decided that the two most important painful issues to address were:

  1. Grief, Loss and Change
  2. Dealing with Death

We wanted to provide uplifting material and support to counter the pain so we chose to look at:

  1. Self-Care
  2. Journaling
  3. Humor
  4. Inspiration

Site Design

  • Banner: We tried many different types of banners looking at color, font, background, noise, and picture/graphics. We finally decided on a light purple that we felt was a spiritual color and a rainbow to signify hope.
  • Page Design: We worked with Photoshop elements creating tables for our side column and bottom column. We also experimented with coloring. We initially had different coloring for all the columns but came to the conclusion that exists because it was readable and legible.
  • Navigation: We initially had many more navigation sites than we currently show. We had other categories such as resource and toolbox, personal memoirs and essays, journaling exercises, and message or chat rooms. After discovering so many websites that currently exist, we decided to link to these sites rather than create more information. We were still able to include this information by using links instead of reinvention.

    The navigation architecture:

  • Organizes the information into logically related groups so users can find the content they are looking for.
  • The main links are clearly visible.
  • The Home Page accurately reflect the content of the main site.
  • The Primary Destination Page discusses the content for that site.
  • Each Destination Page also includes secondary links to web address.
  • Credibility includes the contact address, date written, navigation back to home page, and a short title page on each primary destination page.

Content Inventory: We each worked on specific items separately as well as working together on some content. The breakdown is as follows:

  1. Logo and Page Template: Both
  2. Images: We decided not to use images outside the logo
  3. Web Links: We both explored related web links that connect to each page. Both of us found the links and put them onto the website. We also reviewed several links and decided not to use some of them.
  4. The following pages were set up:

Introduction Page: C. Preuett did the first draft in paper format and C. Carlson added to that and put it on the computer

    Survivors: C. Preuett

    Problems Encountered:

    1. It took us a while to get use to using Photoshop elements correctly.
    2. We had trouble deciding what headings and fonts to use but finally came to a conclusion.
    3. We spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to transfer the information from Microsoft word to the actual template and then adjusting the font, headings, color, and highlighting of key words, indenting, and bulleting once in dreamweaver.
    4. We had planned a different navigation system on paper and later realized that it would be too complicated so we had to delete some information look at our priorities again.
