Student planners
At the beginning of the semester, writing any syllabus information you receive into your planners is a great way to start the semester off right. This way you will always know the longest amount of time you can procrastinate, but still have it done on time. Warning—some professors assume that you go by their syllabus like it’s the 11th commandment and they will not tell you what is due next class time. Review your student planner and be sure to spread the word to your friends' class so they can procrastinate right along with you.
Start timing how long it will take to get places
Bangsberg is a lot further away than you might think. It takes a good 10-15 minutes to walk from the dorms to the last building on campus. Beware that some professors dock points if you are late to class. Write down the time it takes to get to your classes from your dorm room in your student planner, so that you will always have them on hand and will be able to set your alarm to get the maximum amount of sleep.
Wally's food gets old fast
Wally's is a nickname for Walnut Dining Hall, the largest dining facility on campus. Eating at Wally's everyday is the time that makes freshmen really miss home. Try cooking for yourself in the dorms or with friends. You could do a cooking rotation where everyone cooks something new once a week. The dorm kitchens aren't always the best smelling but it sure does beat starring at the same brick walls of Wally's.
Adjusting to college classes
Remembering when your classes are every other day and at strange times is hard. Tape your schedule next to your bed and look at it every night before you go to bed. Carry one with you in your bag, your wallet or purse, your car and one at work. Also, college classes for Freshmen aren't always extremely hard. Most of them are big lecture classes where you are only graded on tests. Developing good study habits in High School is a great stepping stone to getting good grades in college.
Sleeping habits
Finding peace and quiet in the dorms isn't’t always easy, especially when it comes to sleeping. Rarely a night goes by that someone isn’t yelling, running up and down the halls, playing loud music or giggling uproariously. Try not to let this bother you. Your sleeping habits will soon change and going to bed at midnight on weekdays and waking up at noon on weekends will soon become the norm. There is however, one rule that every freshmen should live by. Never sign up for an 8 am class. You have many years to fulfill your liberal education credits. You will also never know how many 8:00 a.m. classes you will need for your major. Don’t start suffering now from lack of sleep learning about underwater basket weaving--wait until you’re a senior. Trying to sleep with a restless, sleep walking, sleep talking and snoring roommate will be extremely annoying, but as the days go by you will get used to it, by sleeping through it or joining in on her sleep talking conversations.
