Preparing for dorm life

Prioritizing

Sports
As a college student, developing priorities will be the difference between good grades and average grades. Being a collegiate student-athlete is something that you may want to think about. Only 4 percent of high school athletes go on to a higher level of play. By this, it explains how difficult it can be to juggle sports and school responsibilities. Freshmen who decide to play for a team must realize that there are sacrifices that need to be made. Choosing light load of credits may be a necessity, because missing classes for competitions is common. By missing class time, it's harder to get the required tasks completed for a given major.

Friends Back Home
Going to college for the first time without your friends back home is very common. A few months ago you were enjoying your time together after graduation and now you are miles apart. It's okay for freshmen to go home every weekend for a while. Also, before you come to college you may want to get a computer because sometimes Instant Messaging will be your only way of communicating. Keeping pictures of your friends around and remembering to send them packages on their birthdays will make this adjustment a lot easier for both of you.

Religion
No longer are you living under your parents roof, so deciding how to spend your Sunday mornings soon becomes an issue. BSU has a Lutheran and Catholic church on campus for students. The churches on campus do not have an early morning mass so there should be no excuse to skip church. It's also a great place to meet people that share your faith while going to BSU.

Credit Loads
After dealing with new friends, old friends, and religion, who has time for school? All entering Freshmen should not overload themselves with too many credits. Deciding on a major too early may bring frustration and confusion later on. The first semester of school is a great time to learn good study habits but also give you enough time with your friends. Hopefully you have developed good study habits in high school which will easily carry over into college. If you do decide on a major don't be certain that you will keep it. Most students change their majors two or more times during their four years here.

Tunnel Exploration
BSU offers something that not a lot of campuses have, a tunnel system. The tunnels are the veins of the campus and the students are the blood cells. Do not attempt to travel the tunnels without going through them prior to class. More importantly, do not go alone for the first time. They are very tricky to master, which could cause major headaches. The best way to explore them and see where they go is during the weekends with a group of people and walkie-talkies. When you master the tunnels, you will be extremely happy in the winter. You will never have to walk outside in the cold, snowy and icy weather again.

Jobs on Campus
Having a job on campus should not be your number one priority when attending college. You may have no choice, if you have to pay for your own education. BSU offers a work study program where they have a limited amount of money for the students on campus jobs. The jobs are usually easy and leave plenty of time for students to study at work. There is also a regular payroll program where you must work 20hrs per pay period but you do get paid around $7.25 to $8.25 an hour. Some of the jobs you can apply for are, working at the library, food service and a janitorial service.
