Personalizing dorm
Bringing things from home that fit your personality are useful to cover the white walls. Having a personalized room will not feel as confining in your 17' by 11' space that will be called home for nine months out of the year.

Bring items from home
For entering Freshmen, one of the more important personalizing items for the dorm are lots and lots of pictures and posters. Not only do pictures of friends and family remind you of home, they also add color to your drab walls. Don't be ashamed to bring any furniture you can from home. Keep in mind that furniture that is used and 70's looking is much cheaper than trying to look cool with a leather sofa taking up most of the space in your dorm. Blankets, fabric and throws work well for covering the brown and yellow floral print love seat that has been in grandma's basement since the second World War.
Coordinating with your roommate
Some freshmen think that they need to coordinate their room items with their roommate. Not only is this not necessary, it is also a waste of money. By the end of the year your stuff will be sat on, spit on, and worn out. Don't worry if it will match or not.
