Preparing for dorm life

Dorm Items

BSU gives you a list of items you need to buy or bring up to college. Some of those items are important, while others don’t make any sense. Sometimes the information BSU gives is frustrating because it needs to go through the usual bureaucratic red tape. Make your own judgments, and decide for yourself what you might need.

Here is a list of some dorm items that people may tell you to bring, but really don’t know what they are talking about:

Sleds

If you find a place for them, then have at it. The only place you can store it, is on your bed, a perfect pretend boyfriend

Shoe racks

You don’t need to bring up every shoe you own. If you live in Bemidji, the only shoe you need, is moose skin boots for winter.

A ratchet set

Unless you like to fix toilets, there is no reason to bring it.

Dorm items to keep note of:

Computer

No one wants to walk all the way to the Super Lab to write a paper. It's cheaper to talk with your friends using instant messaging, being that the dorms do not have long distance phone service.

Fan

This is essential to have because you have no control on the heat during the winter months. It gets extremely hot in the dorms. It also blocks off the sound of the drunken yodelers outside.

Vacuum

The vacuum that the front desk gives you is heavier than a car, it doesn’t suck up anything and is extremely loud. If you want your dorm clean buy yourself a vacuum.

Car

Everyone will tell you to not bring up a car. They are wrong. It is really hard to bum rides to home, and when you are about to explode from school work and friend drama you, need to be able to have that freedom to go some where by yourself.

Extra food

Do not eat Wally's food on a regular basis. One meal a day is the maximum. Some possible symptoms of eating Wally's are nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach and diarrhea.

Curtains

To those who are used to living in the country, the lights never turn off in the streets at BSU. If you live on the east side of the dorm wing, the morning sun shines right in your window, making it hard to sleep.

Christmas lights

The overhead light causes major headaches and brain cancer which causes your body to swell. Find some fun Christmas lights to cover your dorm. It gives your dorm a calm, soothing feeling.

Bath caddy

When holding on to a bottle of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, your poof, loofah and other shower items and you have no other hand to hold your towel or bath robe shut, it is best to get yourself a bath caddy.

Quarters

It is very important to have a cup full of quarters for laundry, since the change machines never work.

Humidifier

During the winter months it gets really dry in the dorms. A humidifier is a solution to dry lungs, coughing and wheezing.

Chap stick

Walking a mile to and from class out in the cold is not the best way to keep your lips perfect. Always keep a stick of chap stick in your jacket, backpack or on your key chain.
