Spinning

There are many tools used in preparing and spinning fiber. These tools change, depending on the fiber you are using and how you are spinning it.

Spinning Wheel vs Drop Spindle

Many spinners begin with Drop Spindles and once mastered, advance to the Spinning Wheel. It takes a great deal of coordination to master spinning, but once you have you will find it to be a very relaxing and beneficial hobby.

This is a tool for getting the fiber off the bobbin and into skein form.

When you have finished spinning (your bobbin is full) you need to wind the fiber off to set the twist. Once you have the yarn in skein form you need to get it wet. It is important to just dunk it in room-temperature water (do not agitate the fibers). You can twist out the excess water. Hang the wet skein with some weight pulling it taut. Let dry. This will set the twist.

After you have set the twist you can either ply the yarn with another (see How to: Spinning Wheel to make 2-ply or 3ply yarn - thicker yarn) or you can crochet, knit or weave your yarn as desired!
