How To: Drop Spindle
drop spindle This is a top-whorl drop spindle.
Drop spindle side view To Begin: Tie on a piece of yarn (approx. 12 inches long) for a lead. Wrap this piece of yarn around the drop spindle several times then up around the round disk of the drop spindle. Feed the yarn through the hook so that there's approx. 3-4 inches for you to start spinning from.

Holding the yarn with your left hand, lay the wool under the yarn and spin the spindle in a clockwise direction with your right hand.

It is IMPORTANT to keep the spindle moving in a CLOCKWISE direction at all times.

Your right hand will have the fiber pinched off and held in one place. With your left hand pull the wool towards you a little ways, thinning the fiber as you do so. Pinch off with your left hand and release your right hand. This allows the twist to travel upwards, towards your left hand.

With your right hand pinch just below your left (towards the spindle) and repeat the above step.

When you have spun enough yarn that the spindle is nearly to the floor you need to wind the yarn onto the spindle. Unhook the yarn from the spindle and wind aroun the spindle evenly. Avoid bulges, they can lead to tangles. When you are ready to spin again repeat previous steps.
