Choosing Your Program

Our English department offers three distinct programs, which can lead to different post-graduation opportunities. English majors should consider their plans for the future and talk with an advisor when choosing a program. This page is meant as a guide in making that decision. Bachelor of Science in English

Focus: English teaching, literature, writing skills.

Careers and Learning: This degree is for students who wish to obtain an English teaching license in the State of Minnesota. Those who want to teach English in a community college or pursue a graduate degree may also benefit from this program.

Bachelor of Arts in English

Focus: Literature, writing.

Careers and Learning: This degree can lead to a career teaching writing at a 2-year college or 4-year university. Students preparing for an MA in English will benefit from this program. Those interested in the written word may consider the BA with an Emphasis in Writing.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative and Professional Writing

Focus: Creative writing, workshopping, technical writing.

Careers and Education: The BFA can lead to careers in editing, freelance writing, web writing and design, public relations, and more. An Electronic Writing minor can compliment this degree. Students may also consider an MFA program elsewhere after graduation.
