Assignment for the Week: Responding to Birkerts The response assignment is up and available on the wiki. The reading, two chapters from "The Gutenberg Elegies," by Sven Birkerts, are outside my office door, HS 314. You'll read them both, of course, but you need only respond to one of the chapters. The response is due next Sunday, April 6th, midnight. Post a link to your response on the Daybook. I'll be paying wiki and blog visits this week. Saturday, March 29

Coming Soon: Intrigue, Mystery, Reading.... I'll post a reading and responding assignment on Sunday evening. You'll need to pick up the reading at my office - HS 314. It will be available starting Friday afternoon, 28 Mar. Looks like projects are proceeding apace. I'll be paying more visits this weekend. Thursday, March 27
Whoo Hoo, Whoo Hoo, here is my replacement project blog link Femina MosaicPlease link me to the class list of projects so I don't get lost from the roster! Tuesday, March 25
Damn this thing.. I always seem to have problems when it comes to blog. I am not sure if it is me or blog itself but I find it courious that I am not the only one. Lets try again. Recently I had a discussion with my 80 year old father-in-law regarding the Iraq war. Nelson often emails his thoughts to us and I thought that I would share this one with the class. I have always valued his insight of the world around us, he is a wise old man. If you have responses to this letter feel free to discuss your thoughts with us either for or against. i was rereading my reflection today and decided it needed a little dessert. this is a link to my revised MidtermReflection looks like our class has posted some valuable stuff so far. Monday, March 24
Blogs and Wikis, have you heard? Our class is becoming the talk of the town. My husband was at a political meeting of some sort and a lady started talking about blogs and wikis. So, of course, my husband had to ask. Turns out she is married to someone in our class. My husband came home and found me blogging right where he left me and asked, is there a so and so in your class? Funny. Okay ya'll - My entry from yesterday was supposed to be linked to my blog reflection, but for some reason its being difficult (My entry "Anymore reflecting and I'm going to need some serious therapy") had "reflecting" linked to my response, but nothing seems to be working to do so. Anyway, if you go to my blog, its under "Midterm Reflection." Sorry to make it difficult for ya'll. I'm from Montana - I can say ya'll as much as I want! I received the ok from Mike to start a new project, MachellesMeanderings . I am writing a journal of essays of my life more so for a theorputic outlet for me. Some of it will be fun, insightful, sad and even horrible but that's life. I am looking forward to expressing my hopes, dreams, aspriations, fears and sarrows so that I may continue to grow as a person. I haven't a whole lot entered as yet but I promised Mike that I would plugg away at this and get myself caught up with the rest of the class. Loose yourself As far as I can tell, most of the reflections are in and linked - and I've been having a fast look at some of them: good stuff. Spend the week, as usual, moving forward: posting posting writing writing - You only get one shot - do not miss your chance to blow - yo Here's the rough plan - - week of 3/30 - a reading to respond to. I'll post it all this Sunday evening. - week of 4/6 - no assignments. keep working - week of 4/13 - studio visits - week of 4/20 - nothing formally assigned. start to prepare for presentations and the beat goes on dadadum dadadum Sunday, March 23
I have no idea why I can't create the link. I am reflected out and going to bed where I will have sweet dreams of homework done, teachers happy, students content and a long stretch of sunshine to carry us through! Good night all! Reflecting to much, the wikki doesn't like verbosity. I also can't remember how to link this double wikki reflection. So here goes. My Midterm Reflection (s) is up finally also. You're not alone Karl. It does my heart good to see that I'm not the only one to get messed up when posting these links. And now it's got to be...off the the rest of my work! A reflection to shatter a mirror with... Caroline, I wish I had a reason to wait so long to finish. But I'm a procrastinator...with two hours to spare! (crowd cheers) ...Good Night Faith In the event that last link didn't work, and it didn't seem like it did, here's what I have. Ladies and Gentlemen....for the very first time on our stage... The Reflections! I finished my reflection and enjoyed reading other peoples reflections. I think that I like waiting until later to post mine, so I can see if I'm on the right track or not. Okay I'm done with my reflection. Okay. I am going to see if I can't have a doctor apply some leeches. Blood pressure is a little high right now. In the event that I cannot find a machine that will let me edit, as these in the library must have some difference in preferences that I cannot figure out, then what I presently have posted is what I have. Guess I am breaking one of Blood's rules about never posting when you're angry. Regardless, here is what I have... I have decided to change my project and have provided my reflections and why I need to change my project. Mine will be here shortly. I have been waiting for service to be re-established at my house, and that's just not happening, so here I am at the A.C. Clark finishing it up. I hate the inconveniences and hoops that technology sometimes makes us jump through, but it is nice that the process can be completed from various entry points. See you all in a few. My Midterm Reflection is done. Please help yourself to an extra large dose of Andrea's muddled mindset. Saturday, March 22
I also decided to change my project here's the new proposal. Come visit my blog at Sweet Caroline's Blog. Well, I got the MidtermReflection project done. /pant /pant /wipes forehead Have a great weekend everyone! What a beautiful Saturday! Friday, March 21
Attention M. C. Morgan and company-I would like to announce a change of direction for my blog project and a new link for it. I have a long drive ahead of me yet tonight for thinking about it.femina mosaic Here is an extemely interesting discussion on the use of bloggs by war correspondents and "what this new writing space might be influencing" blogs changing journalism I had a good night tonight working on our projects with Aya's help. I thought I would create my new blog spot so I can change my project. I am INSPIRED but apparently to tired to get it into action. Goodnight John Boy. Thursday, March 20
I decided to change my project to expanding my blog. I enjoyed blog way more than I find I am using the wiki. My wiki was more of a posting of my Word document journal for my project. I would journal in Word and then read and review and edit and edit then post to the wiki. I like the fact that I can just type and edit once for typos then post my blog. I'm going to expand my topics, but I just started out talking about my day. Come visit. I enjoyed visiting Christensen's Wiki and spent over and hour exploring, great reading! I was shown a wedding planner website called The Knot I wanted to share. After information on wedding is filled in, the individual couples wedding info. is available online. The interesting thing though is the individual couples page looks like a oneshot psuedo-weblog!?! Another variation of concept... This is for anyone who is wondering what they can do to deal with their feelings about the war. A good reminder for all of us to (M. C.M. will love this!) to FOCUS on what every writer instinctively knows but often forgets.Chip Scanlon Blog We've Made the Four Cs The Conference for College Composition and Communication (4Cs or CCCC) - the primary conference in my field of composition and rhetoric - takes place in NYC this weekend. Big conference. Lots of scholars. Joe Moxley, Prof of English at USF, and who teaches with wikis, has linked our class wiki into his presentation, "Weblogs and Wikis: Can They Transform Composition Teaching, Collaboration, and Scholarship?" You can read his notes for the presentation. Did I promise you cutting edge or what? First Blood, now this... Wednesday, March 19
Machelle, your 3/15 words touched me in a deep and personal way. Please share what you have inspired in my musings in the thought of past days. Relate This! Here is the link to the wiki page Relationship With Blog Or Wiki. This is just a ounding board about the blog or wiki v. journal v. prose writing "relationship". No right answers, just toss out ideas. Also linked off the Mar 19 Midterm Discussion Notes. Seeya! This link is for Mackenzie or whoever might be interested in it. I came across it through the Poynter Institute. journalism site for war info It is a weblog for reporters so there is all sorts of stuff on it of interest. Sunday, March 16
Reminder: Class meets f2f this week: Mar 17 - 21 We meet f2f in the usual classroom at the usual time this week for a reconnoiter and discussion. - HS 109 - M W F - 10:00 - 10:50 Saturday, March 15
After nearly 25 years I find that once again I am faced with a fear that I never thought I would encounter again in my life. Remembering as a child sitting in front of the b/w TV watching the daily count of injured and dead on the nightly news and hoping that my dad wasn't one of those statics. Today I learned that my eldest brother, his two son and another nephew have been called to active duty and will leave Tuesday for the gulf. I am heart broken, and scared to death. I don't believe in this war, I don't believe that we should have any part of it. But what of those that I love? I am torn between my beliefs and my love for them. Should I be supportive for them or not? I am scared to death that our two sons will be drawn into this conflict if it turns out to be another Vietnam. I just don't understand it. My world seems to be collasping around me and I am loosing my strength. What of other mothers, sisters, girlfriends, are they feeling the same? How are they dealing with their fears? Forgive my writing here, I needed to vent. Wednesday, March 12
Juanita, thanks for taking my suggestion....have I mentioned that I love your site....very creative. I enjoy the font- it is readable. My vote is in for this new look. Awesome I hope it doesn't cause much confusion, but I changed my blog address; please don't throw things at me *duck*. It's now http://thevoiceofachild.blogspot.com. I took Crystal's advice and added TONS of bright color to it, although she may not want to take credit for the splattered mess I've created (I go overboard sometimes) ;o) At least take a glance for a good laugh! I also messed with the font, but I'm not sure if it's too hard to read now or not. Oh well, it was fun anyways. With Google now in charge of blogger, I typed my last name into the search engine. Our classroom blog and wiki came up. I also located a shirt tail artist relative in Canada. Give it a try. (and this is what spring break has become) Anyone find an interesting relative? e-mail me if you do...curiosity Tuesday, March 11
Hey, that web poem artistry by Mia Frogner is wonderful. I kept clicking, wondering where it was taking me. Then I wanted more when I couldn't have it. Reminded me of really good TV advertising. Not the beer comercial kind. More along the Target Market anti-smoking ads. Compelling. "Tool" has a talented following. Actually...as soon as my studio tour was done I checked and checked until tours about my site were done. I am (and probably always will be) and input junkie. Thanks for the reviews jing, brown, and ... ummm gibbons. Whew, almost forgot the name there. lit blogs :: blogs at lit :: et al Those of you interested where blogs and literature intersect might want to have a look at jill/txt (of "Blogging Thoughts: Personal Publication as an Online Research Tool" fame). She's putting together a talk on youth literature, and so has gone surfing for literature-written-by-youths (rather than lit *for* youths), including blogs a literature. Links to some poetry, including adikt.no and a web poem by Mia Frogner. Suggests what's possible and that we're just scatching the surface. Monday, March 10
"You're not gonna actually *read* that, are you?'' Looks like the visits are in. Thanks to everyone for visiting everyone. 'Course, you wouldn't want to see what your visitors noticed and commented on, would you. 'Course not. No point. Got better things to do.... I just wanted to comment that this is (a sneaky) but rather fun exercise in that is getting some of us to VOLUNTARILY look at all of the comments on all of the posts! It is interesting to see through another persons eyes if only momentarily. I am finding that I want to look at each of the sites and the postings about them, in order to broaden my understanding of this entire writing space concept. I am already late for an appointment because I started looking at all of our work this morning (a cup of hot tea, a natty old robe, and a quiet household--my version of heaven) but I wanted to comment on this exercise and thank you all for taking the time to be focusing on our assignment when it is spring break for everyone. Sunday, March 9
my studio tour link. i found a welcoming place of internet access. good ole a.c.clark kicked me out before i could finish. I am finished with my studio tour also Studio Tours:Brown, Tong and Gibbons and I hope you are all enjoying your break! I have finish my Studio Tour and it is up on my class works wiki page...and even a little early this time. Go figure! Thanks M C M for the extra time over the weekend. It really helped through a period of midterms. P.S. These two messes below me are mine. Sorry! Go figure! Thanks M C M for the extra time over the weekend. It really helped through a period of midterms. Whew! I finished it on Wednesday, but forgot to post it until today. It's a good thing I thought of it. If anyone wants to read my thoughts on the Studio Tour assignment, it is finally up. Thanks for the advice, Jeremy. I fixed the bolding problem, cleaned up my sidebar and learned a little more html. Last Call: Studio Tours [Can you drink them up ladies and gentlemen please?] Studio tours, part 1 are due... [Have you no homes to go to?] tonight, Sunday, 9 Mar, midnight. [Goo'night dearie. G'night Irene. T'ra all...] [cross posted to Calendar] Since my buss to Daytona was only prepaid for central Mn, I decided to finish my Studio Tour this evening/morning. Maybe I can still catch a coverage of Spring Break on Satelite? Saturday, March 8
My Studio Tour 1 is done. Each tour is linked off of the page. I felt it was just nicer to give each blog the attention of a single, complete page. I reviewed Chad, Stacey, and Renee. It was fun! Renee says " I am frustrated with how blogger bolds some of my text for no reason" My wife had the same problem with the Honoprclad Souls blog As it turns out in the template style sheet there were 3 different font styles for "p" (default paragraph). This is just careless style sheeting on the behalf of the writer. Make sure all "p" listings in your style sheet (even "p.small" "p.anything" etc) are all pointing to the same font type (bold, italic, regular) and font size. That might fix it. Tour is complete, however, as of 2:10 PM not updated according to my blog. Patience. Renee, Josh, and Jessica, well done! I am frustrated with how blogger bolds some of my text for no reason on my weblog, especially words between links. There is nothing in my text to indicate that I want bold, but it appears, randomly and unfixable. Any advice on how to undo unasked for bolding? Friday, March 7
Yes, it's true. I finished my Studio Tour before Spring Break was fully in stride. "Ruh Roh, Ring Rake!" Hello there. I completed my Studio Tour, and did each at a different time, so they may seem a bit disjointed. Then again, that might just be my mind...have a great break everyone! Reminder: Studio Tours, aka Wiki Quickies Before you head off on the bus trip to Daytona, take your studio tours, part 1. Visit three projects and write 'em up. Deadline is Sunday, 9 Mar, midnight. Happy visiting. Confused and wandering through the works, but here's what conclusions I came to. I call them Wiki Quickies. Wednesday, March 5
Call for submissions to Whitewater Review Indiana University East hosts an internet-based journal of writing, Whitewater Review. They are seeking submissions from students at other universities. Tuesday, March 4
Commentator, Communicator, Autobiographer - Read All About It -Joshua Murray - the commentator/critic of web stuff ( he's brutal, he's blunt, but you won't be able to stop reading). -Jessica Delosreyes - The communicator of the common human condition (hungry and not always willing to moderate consumption). -Ayleen Lindahl - the wiki autobiographer extraordinaire (she's dressed in a long black dress, she's flying higher than a kite - don't miss out). It is my pleasure to present these three sites to you: my classmates, my fellow web writers, and esteemed instructor. Reminder - and Extension Take your first studio tours, part 1 this week. Visit three projects and write 'em up. But I'd like to extend the deadline to Sunday, 9 Mar, midnight for those who like to tour on weekends. Happy visiting. Sunday, March 2
Where is everybody tonight? Doesn't anyone post here anymore unless they have to? I suppose that everyone is hunkered down on the projects or starting studio tours. I got a chance to shoot some digital video yesterday when I went to White Oak for their Winter Camp with my wife and grandaughter. It was truly white, as a light snow was falling as we were going there and while we were shooting. I hope I got some good stuff at the NW Co. post with members in costume and character. Studio Tours! As promised, here's the assigment for the week: studio tours, part 1. You'll visit three projects and write 'em up. Due by Friday, midnight - or before. Happy visiting. I'm a true blonde and thought the response was due Sunday. Sorry. I don't know that the phrase "Better Late Than Never" would apply, but here it is nonetheless. responding to responding to blood I'll be emailing feedback on your responses to Blood this week - as well as visiting more projects. This week is Studio Tour week, so watch for the assignment this evening. Meanwhile, thanks to whomever fleshed out the McNuggets on the assignment page. That's how a wiki is supposed to work. Love it! Saturday, March 1
