How to Make Chex Muddy Buddies aka Puppy Chow

For a quick and easy snack for my roommates and I, we create Chex Muddy Buddies, otherwise known as Puppy Chow. It is fun to make and can get messy at times, but it kills the late afternoon or late night cravings. This creation is also good for a long car ride, or to stick in the lunch box.

The instruments needed to make Puppy Chow are found in just about every dorm room or house.

All you need is:

  • A large bowl (an CLEAN ice cream pail)
  • A microwave able bowl
  • A microwave
  • 1 cup measuring cup
  • 1/2 cup measuring cup
  • 1/4 cup measuring cup
  • A teaspoon measuring spoon
  • A long instrument to stir
  • If desired, you may need wax paper to lay puppy chow on to cool.

For the ingredients:

  • A box of Chex (any variety, but I prefer Corn)
  • One package (6 oz.) of Nestle Tollhouse semi-sweet chocolate chips (1 cup)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup margarine or butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

To make:

Pour 9 cups of Chex cereal into the pail, set it aside. Microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and margarine or butter in the microwave able bowl on high for 1 minute, then stir. Then microwave 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Pour chocolate mixture over Chex cereal in pail, stir until all individual Chex are covered. Add powdered sugar to the Chex mixture, place lid on ice cream pail and shake. Check mixture to make sure that all pieces are evenly coated and they are ready to eat. Mixture may be hot and messy at this point, if desired, spread Chex mix on waxed paper too cool. This makes about 9 cups of puppy chow.

Variation of Puppy Chow

Another Variation of Puppy Chow is Blizzard Party Mix

All you need is:

  • An Ice Cream pail
  • A 13 X 9 inch pan
  • Cooking Spray
  • A Microwave
  • Long instrument to stir
  • Microwaveable bowl
  • A 1 cup measuring cup

For the ingredients:

  • 2 cups Chex Corn Cereal
  • 2 cups small pretzel twists
  • 1 cup Planters Peanuts
  • 1 cup caramels (about 20) unwrapped and finely chopped
  • 2 cups Nestle Toll House Premier White Morsels

To make:

Spray 13X9 inch pan with cooking spray. Combine Chex, pretzels, peanuts, and caramels in ice cream pail. Microwave morsels in microwaveable bowl for 1 minute, stir every 10 to 20 seconds until smooth. Pour smoothed morsels over combination in ice cream pail and mix until fully covered. Spread in pan and let sit for 20 to 30 minutes or until firm. Finally, break into bite-size pieces.
