Since childhood my grandparents had told stories about life in Norway. From an early age, there was a feeling inside of me that someday I would see the things they talked about. As an adult I was able to travel to the hometowns of my grandparents and visit the relatives still living in the small communities nestled in the mountains. My grandparents never returned to their homeland. However, I was able to return to my grandparents the ground of their brithplaces. Norwegian soil lovingly placed on each of their graves, brings full circle the gift of their memories and heritage to me. For over a generation, my family in Norway and my family in the United States have been seperated by the the Atlantic Ocean...and language. In 1998, I met the Norwegian family for the first time. MY dream had come true. The following pages are dedicated to those family members who dared to travel to a foreign country and make a new life for themsleves and written in honor of those who stayed in the homeland and preserved the ancient history of our family.
