Welcome to Liverpool!

Liverpool is located on the Mersey River. Before the Beatles, it was primarily known as a port city. Many immigrants on their way to America left Europe's shores from Liverpool. Today, Beatle fans from all over the world flock to this city. However, there is more to Liverpool than the Beatles. This site will show you some of what I saw there, and hopefully convince you to go there yourself.

"Liverpool is the pool of life"

After all, "Liverpool is the pool of life," as Carl Jung said in 1927.

How I got there

When I was sixteen, my Auntie Susie asked me where I would go if I could go anywhere in the world. I replied Liverpool. Little did I know that she was planning to take me there for a high school graduation present. The majority of our time was spent in other places around England. We also did an overnight trip to Paris.

We only spent two days in Liverpool: August 8 and 9, 1999. It was great! Especially for a big time Beatles fan.

Pulling into Lime Street Station on a train on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I couldn't believe I was entering the city of my idols. I wanted to take it all in. I wanted to go back in time to understand what it was like in 1959. Feelings of anticipation overwhelmed me.

It's getting better

Until now, the trip had been so-so. We had arrived in England about two days before we went to Liverpool. We had been in Oxford, which was nice, but I was feeling jet lagged and was still adjusting to the six hour time difference. By the time we got to Liverpool, I was feeling much better.

Football on the telly?

Here's your typical Liverpool street. On our first night in town, Auntie Susie and I were looking for a place to eat. We saw a pub. An older lady was coming out of it with a look of disgust on her face. We tried asking her if they served food there. All she said to us was something incomprehensible.

We entered the pub anyway and saw that it was more of a drinking establishment than eating. There was a soccer game on TV.

We finally figured out what the lady was saying (we think):

"Football on the telly on a Sunday!"
