Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo: Preface

What am I Doing?

The purpose of this paper was to inform people about the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska. I visited it during my spring vacation and thogh that it was a remarkable institution. I was really excited about my visit there and hoped to entice people to try it and other zoos themselves. Because I have visited many zoos, or at least what I would consider many, I thought that this zoo stood out over the rest and I wanted to represent it on this site.

Design

Like with all of the pages that I have worked with, I wanted the design to look fun and friendly, straight to the point and without a lot of confusion. The way that I tried to accomplish this was first, by using cool colors that coordinated with the banner. Blues and cool purples are relaxing colors to me and I hoped to convey that same feeling into the web site. I initially had a much different web site than the one that is up right now. At first I had the links to the other parts of the page in the left hand column, but I decided to pull them out because I wanted the side bar to be for people who wanted to know more abot the zoo, particularly about visiting it; I wanted to set the rest of hte pages aside from the rest. That's also why I chose a smaller font for the left bar too and a more profound font for the other pages.

I also had the the entire essay on one page and the images on separate pages, but I felt that there needed more on the picture pages, so I decided to take the individual sections and put them with the images. Besides the text also seemed too long. Too much to swallow at once. I considered making a seperate page with the entire essay on it in an easily printable version.

I kept the same links on all pages so that you could go anywhere from anywhere.

Writing for the web

I thought that writing for one or the other audience wasn't all that different for me, but then maybe I was doing something wrong. I tried to be less artsy fartsy with my writing, but I found myself trying to make it more interesting. I like writing in my notebook with no rules better though.

Difficulties

Some of the difficulties that I encountered with the page was in setup. I tried a lot of different ways of navigation, but the most people friendly, I thought, was to have the same navigation at the bottom and top of each page so that once on one page you could go anywhere that you want.
