Preface

Welcome to the website for Bemidji State University students of the Young Adult Literature course (Engl 3540). This site is to provide a short summary of the plot and a book reviews by and for the students of the class.

What is YA Lit?

YA Lit is anything that students, junior high to those newly graduated from high school and finding their way to adult life, read. Literature for Young Adults is classifed as materials for ages12-18.

Realism is a coming of age book, where the character struggles with real life issues. Most of the characters come from harsh, difficult places to live. Some times called the problem novel.

Adventure, mystery, the supernatural, and humor are read for pure pleasure. The ancients loved and retold adventure stories of the gods and mortals like Hercules.

Fantasy and science fiction are related to each other and often group as one category in bookstores. Each allows the author to make up the rules, but there are rules to follow. Utopia and Dystopia are closely related and often used in science fiction and fantasy novels.

History books are a good way to show young readers a glimpse into different opinions and ways of life. History stories satisfy our curiosity about other times.

Romanticism, of wishing and winning, is a form of quest, sometimes to find wisdom and understanding. The subject can be harsh, but is overcome in the end by hard, painstaking work.

  • Romantic Love

  • Accomplishments with religion
