Final ReportBy Amber Berg and Ainsley Pitter PurposeThis site is a pictorial review of the Gillet Recreation Center and of the BSU dormitories. It is for prospective students who are looking for more insight and information about these two facilities. For the Rec Center, information about equipment, activities, and usage is provided about the different room in it. For the dorms, information about each halls availability, type of floors available, and rooms is provided. Our DesignWe knew this site would work best as a hierarchy. From there we decided on our two categories- Rec Center and Dormitories- and what our subheadings would be. We focused the information on what we knew as students who use the facilities already with some added help on the numbers. Our header has changed three times. Our title changed from the first header, the second was not easily readable by the user, but we feel the third is a successful revision. Each page has three buttons across the top which remain the same throughout the site as our main navigation bar. Also, within the two categories-Rec Center and Dormitories- we have another navigation bar, this one with each sub-division that the user may choose from. Our Design ProcessThis site began as a video tour of the Bemidji State campus. Later, feeling we could elaborate more if our topic was more specific, we narrowed it down to two parts of the campus. Revising still, we decided that the time needed to edit video footage and prepare it for the web was not going to be available to us so we when with still photographs. Even though we totally changed our topic at hand we were able to use our original plan for the templates. Ainsley began to make the templates and work on the overall layout of the site. Earlier we decided on our page layout and how the pages would be linked together. As we had two fairly different facilities we felt a second menu home page would be best to let the user see everything that was offered about the dorms without having to look at the information about the Rec Center as well. Amber worked on most of the text as we went along and we both took photographs in trying to get a variety of pictures to use. Problems EncounteredOne of the biggest problems that we encountered was trying to prepare the pictures for the web. There was a lot of time spent trying to manipulate the pictures and getting them to be the correct size without distorting the image by stretching them. There are some pictures that we took vertically with the camera that are still not completely correct and appear stretched. We also encountered several problems in accessing our files from various computers across campus. To combat this problem we stuck to a few trusthworthy computers in the Superlab. |
