Addis Ababa (1896 - present)

Addis Ababa, which
means "New Flower" in Amharic, Ethiopia's
official language, was founded in 1896 by Emperor Menilik II. It is the last
in a succession of capitals of the great Abyssinian empire dating back to the
pre-Christian Axum. With a growing population of two
million people, it is the largest city of the country. Addis Ababa is the political
center of the country and home of the Organization of African Unity (OAU)
and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
More than 95 embassies from all over the world have their missions in Addis
Ababa.
Among others, places to see in Addis include the Jubilee Palace, Africa Hall, Menelik Mausoleum, Merkato, the National Museum and the Trinity Cathedral.
